I can identify with the friend who does not want to see Mark...
I can understand how Mark will feel, but being one who cannot bear to see another in a sick condition, and whose countenance reflects the same, it would be even more painful for Mark to see that friend's suffering, much better to say the truth about that friend, so he doesn't have the feelings of desertion. Best practice possible in these circumstances

I'm sorry to hear the sad news. It's also sad and shocking to hear that his friends cannot bring themselves to be there for him. They are not capable of  facing up to life's reality; pathetic.

I have known people who refuse to visit family or friends in hospitals, nursing homes, or to go to funerals, how sad.   It is in the giving of self to others that we become truly human.  Without being truly human we are nothing more than robots or mannequins.

A Friend Loves At ALL Times....
Forsaking a friend in the time of his life shows one's true makeup. You are exactly right in your statement, "what about the way Mark feels being forsaken."  This is no time for his friends to cop out.

Yes, you got it. We cannot see Jesus crucified on screen too easily

But my religion teaches me this religious PASSION, leads to Godly Compassion. She needs to demonstrate courage ... for a moment forget her feelings, and be in Mark's presence, with God in her heart. Plead with her to approach not alone with Mark, but with God in the equation always. Ame ...courage...Love/Agape.

I am sorry to hear the bad news...
...and your friend needs the support of others now more than ever, so for Mark to not visit him is so unfortunate and unnecessary.
