Thanks Luz - I was aiming for the double meaning - the image of straining to catch the sound and the older, less used meaning of a section of a piece of music... me trying to be clever

that phrase caught my attention. one doesn't usually think of a song as strenous, but in this case it's wonderfuly appropriate.
