Congrats on the job! As to the other stuff - yes, it seems that Japan is still in many ways a 'traditional' society. And economically things must be getting pretty tough - Japan appears to be very much affected by the current economic malaise, where Japanese exports have gone down substantially...

Separate from the attitude that women or expendable, the financial challenges sound similar to what many countries are experiencing right now. But don’t get me started on that…. Glad you secured a part-time job. Hope that makes life a little easier.
