mousehop - that's a good way of putting it

". . . how people think of their gods is such trivial ways they pretty much rule out any truth to their own beliefs."

That is exactly my point. Petitioning the favor of their God for things that have no real value other than entertaining affluent societies, becomes ludicrous in light of real human needs of intervention (if such a thing were possible). I dunno, Darfur as an example comes to my mind when I think in terms of where an omnipotent being would best be spending their divine intervention efforts. Not a professional basball game or the Olympics.

I am glad you shared this post, and that some journalists challenge those actions by athletes that illustrate so well how people think of their gods is such trivial ways they pretty much rule out any truth to their own beliefs.

elinjo - I have always wondered how so many people can overcome so many

inconsistencies so easily?

I can't get past the very first one; According to their mythology, an omnipotent creator being willed mankind into existence in his image and loves all of mankind as his children. But apparently there are exceptions to the word "all", with those on the inclusion list ever changing and evolving over the centuries. If this being loved all of mankind as his children, he could only be rooting for all sides, or as Xeno-x stated in an earlier comment, completely neutral.

Nautikos - I would contend that there are still some subtle remnants of

that mentality existing in western cultures to this day.

At least by extension, in the notion of it is by the grace of God that we are as citizens, collectively wealthy in comparison with most other cultures.

Christianity is a monotheistic religion, which means a belief in one & one only G-d.

Therefore Christians, Jews, Muslims and members of all other religions have an equal share in his bounty. Therefore I  imagine, logically speaking, that the Almighty would be willing to hep for all contestants in a sporting event irrespective of their religious standpoint.

The journalist in question raised a very important point; it seemed to hit home too.

That reminds me that for much of history during the last 1700 years or so, enemies would call on God to assist them in battle, certainly since Constantine did so in the battle of the Milvian bridge in Rome, in 312. The practice continued well into the 20th century. For example, on the belt buckles of the German army during WWI, you found the words 'Gott Mit Uns', God With Us...

odd that these Christians forget the words of Jesus
"God makes his rain to fall on righteous and unrighteous alike" (paraphrased

but the point is that God is neutral, according to the one they think is on their side more than others'.
