The mobile 'phone signal
is weak in our area. How would all those cold callers get through?

I'm in favor of cell. Mind you, it's mostly switched off and I use it for emergencies. Re your comment: I do write the odd poem, I am the inventor of 'poetry light'. If you are interested, scroll back and you'll find some.

My almost 70 year old mother who worked for a phone company for 40 years has given up her land line for a cell phone and says she will never go back.

I heard that cell phones are more reliable in emergencies than they use to
be. Still, I'd rather have both!

Maybe in your case Vonage might work but the average person they dont take in consideration you are paying for the high speed and the phone service and like I mentioned the electricty goes so does the phone and I dont think they have perfected 911 yet

I have a land line both at home and at my business.....
For the business, i only have one....so I can access the internet with a higher speed DLS line....so I can subscribe to Vonage....I have unlimited long distance.....3 incoming lines, phone number in 3 other cities in my state so clients can call a local number and reach me, an 800 number, an outgoing fax line, and I can take the router with me on a trip and my office phones move with me........All for under $125 a month....
With AT&T i had just 3 lines and my office phone bill averaged over $550 a month.......
If I had access to high speed internet in my home and business from somewhere other than my land line.......AT&T couldn't disconnect me fast enough......
When there was just one phone company.......AT&T, they screwed the American consumer for decades....
