Hands-on is great...you can always take a course if you feel the need...

I like your way of thinking. All five of my kids are home schooled due to many of the drawbacks that you mentioned. I wrote a short post about it in my "Life in the BatCave" blog and am considering creating a blog just on this topic. You are on the right track. Take things a day at a time.
