Ah, A Definitions Question!
The Grammar Guru thinks that these people are, indeed, very religious. As religious as the Pharisees. They practice "Religiosity." That is, they are very concerned with the outward show of piety and religious behaviour. But they are not very Christian. Christians are (supposed to be, anyway) concerned with the transformation of the character. These people missed the boat with their kids---and maybe with themselves.
