Naut & Soulbuilder...
I read three times both of you well-informed gentlemen's blogs related to this subject, and, though feel more informed, also feel more confused...is there any way you two well-meaning gentlemen could give us a unified, global view of what's really behind all these wars that most moderate & sensible people in the wotld could understand and try to do something about in our own unique ways ?...I know this is a tall request, but both of yours' writings are the boldest & most well-informed writings I find on this subject on entire blogit, best wishes, Ash

This man sums it up ather well................
"I am one of the servants of Allah.  We do our duty of fighting for the sake of the religion of Allah.  It is also our duty to send a call to all the people of the world to enjoy this great light and to embrace Islam and experience the happiness in Islam.  Our primary mission is nothing but the furthering of this religion."
Osama bin Laden, May 1998

Nautikos, Your writing on this subject remains the best that I have read.  You definitely know your subject well and articulate it so clearly without getting flustered when someone disagrees with you.  Right On!

Excellent post, Naut...
...and like you alluded to, many people are under the false assumption that Medieval Christianity was the instigator, when as you pointed out, the Crusades were primarily a reaction to Islamic aggression towards Christendom.
Not that other factors didn't come into play, as they always do in conflicts...interpersonal as well as international, but, the attitude of many Westerners towards the Crusades is largely influenced by an ignorance of the topic...not to mention, Political Correctness and it's anti-Western cultural bias.
Happy New Year, by the way!

I'm very pleased to see that my comment triggered such an enlightening post. I still think opinions about the whole subject differ as can be seen from what gapcohen wrote. You can twist and turn it any way you want, killing in the name of God (whatever he is called) and for whatever reason, is still killing and is WRONG. And another thing that always strikes me when I see pictures of the funeral of those particular war victims: the grief on the faces of the relatives of BOTH sides looks exactly the same. So, the question is: what's the whole point of all that violence? Shouldn't the relatives of the Islamic martyrs look happy because they know their loved one has gone straight to paradise? But no...

This is an interesting analysis of religious differences.  I do think, however, that both Jews and Christians (religious Jews especially) would consider their own religion as a "way of life."  I say Jews in particular, because those who live by the Old Testament are considered "Torah" Jews and for them the Torah is a template for living a righteous life.  Jews, too, are concerned more with our life on earth than our "afterlife," though, for sure, we don't have a "divine" commandment to conquer the world!  If anything, the Jewish motto is - "just leave us alone and let us study the Torah in peace!"  Mal

I think this is complicated although it seems to be simplistic! I have a hang up with the Christian that is forceful because it is diametrically opposed to the New Testament. Then Islam I cannot bring myself to study to gain understanding! Therefore, I appreciate your efforts. I don't feel so far out of the loop! Shelly
