"who in this economy will keep all of these palaces of consumerism open throughout the year?? Is shopping a dying art? Will Murfreesboro shut down when everyone realizes that they can't afford to keep shopping as apastime"Really good question Excellent comment!

Shopping malls, from sea to shining sea!
Mal,
You hit the nail on the head with this post! We have gone from being the worlds most productive, richest, best "quality of life" country, to the worlds most active consumers of everything. We have become a country of "Service Providers," (Want fries with that?) and we pay our bills with money that comes from some mysterious unknown source, that doesn't need manufactured goods, only servicing. Sounds to me as though we ought to stop belittling all those women who stand on the same corner each night, flagging down cars. What is the difference between them and us? I don't get it either.

Re: Re:
Gap, I googled it and found that the diamond mine field is in Murfreesboro, Arkansas. Sorry. Many years ago, My sis & BIL went there and my BIL brought home a little diamond in the rough. That's why the name rang a bell with me.

I celebrate Christmas and am very tired of the commercialism with it! I hear you on the shops, it keeps happening in my town too! I wonder what it will be in a year as well around here! I think it is unfortunate you cannot find the items to assist in celebrating your traditions! It just doesn't seem right! Actually a little shortsighted in my eyes! Have a great Sunday Mal! sammy

Re:
Hey, Taps, if there ever was a diamond field around here it's been dug up and paved over. No - this is really close to Jack Daniels distillery. I guess that can be considered a precious mineral to some! Mal

Mal, Isn't Murfreesborough the place where there is a diamond field where one can search for diamonds, or am I thinking of something else? LOL

As seems to happen often, I am right there with you...
There are three Walmarts within easy driving distance from here, and they are preparing to put in another down the road, less than a mile from here. It will be next to a Costco and Fred Meyer (that may be a chain that does not yet extend to every corner of the US--yet.) There is another FM about 7 miles from this one. There are Sears and Target anchoring one mall across the street from the farther Freddie's, and the one less than 10 miles away has a Penney's and a Macy's, not to mention, Best Buy and Circuit City (which actually has fallen to the economic times, and is now under the talons of the vultures, as is the entire chain of Linens'n'Things. Within spitting distance of the second mall is a Staples, an Office Depot and Office Max--which is beside another Target.
This holiday season, I actually shopped in four of these places, total. It was tons more fun, shopping in the few small shops we still have downtown.
I envision a future in which there will be one superstore per person around here.
