Then, as I sat by the attic door, wondering how the cat had gotten herself
into such a predicament, it suddenly occured to me that under these conditions, the pets were as separated as me and my ex. A coincidence? Or had we paired an imcompatible couple? A dog and a cat? How stupid of us! Is the cat up there hoping to never see that stupid dog again?

addition to the story
When I reached the top, I pressed my ear firmly against the heavy oak door. After what seemed like forever, I heard another muffled mewing from inside the attic. It sounded so far away. I tried the knob, and as I had expected, the door was locked.
"What the...?" I wondered aloud, "How in the hell...?"
Too confused to think straight, but too curious to let it be, I sat down on the top step and waited. Waited for my head to clear a little, waited to hear more mewing, just waited...
