This has all the ingredients of a slightly bizarre play! Two people drawn together by intersecting but not merging motivations: pity on your part, 'love' on his. If he were younger, pity could turn into love - leading to further complications, major mayhem or a menage a trois. But since his age remains an unbridgeable obstacle, we have a farce with many possible permutations of the 'pursuit and flight' variety...
The more I think about it, the more I am convinced you have a play here...
