Spitfire, they do cost money. Not the $1,500 price tag for a Yorkie, mind you, but just regular shots and check ups and good food and toys, etc.
Even a free dog costs money as all of mine have been freely offered to me, but they don't eat dirt and grass, at least not consistently enough for me to count on that...
I am switching them onto Halloween candy corn, however, as they found some on my work table and the candy corns disappeared. Now the dogs beg for them while I eat them.
