Reminds me of the song....
...."Tears of a Clown" by Marvin Gay....I think it was his.
I love the honesty and courage of this poem.
And the theme is definitely universal. Well done.

Re: Your comment
Hi John
Thank you for your comment. I guess many poems are multi-layered and even we who write them don't know fully what is in them for others to see - just like us as people. I am putting one in today that you may care for - see what you think.

Just read your 3 prior and commented. This one is a bit of a change-up toward a more serious side. This is a good poem and well written, but I do question the question. The thought is universal because we all have these moments/feelings, and in this sense the poem has appeal. But it did start raising a question for me: for if the outer me is all people perceive, is it because that's what I project--like an A or B personality (some people are just extroverts, and they like to project). Nothing wrong with that, but it's not others job to see what's inside ourselves--even if they just see what they want to see (which might be the inner theme, here).
On the other side of the coin is another public secret: Sometimes I'm my only audience--which isn't a bad idea, because at least someone appreciates me. So while people see what they might want to see, another part of the equation is are we projecting what we would like them to see?
And now for the 3rd Dimension, and perhaps the bottom of it all: If we are asking another to see within us, do we have anything for them to see? Or is this why we ask for their inner projection? Do we know what that is (our essence) ourselves?
As you can see, I really did get a lot out of this poem. While it might not have been your intention (and of that I can't be sure),it sure invoked a lot of thought in me.
