Re:

Thanks John.

I am an avid reader. . . my mom is tired of all my stacks of books. . .

My writing is quite eclectic. . . just look at all the different entrees I have ranging from scholarly to silly. . . 3 line poems, haikus to several page poems such as A Modern Day Cinderella. . . analysis of others' writings. . . funny stories of my past. . . musings

IMHO That First Teacher Sucked!
The type is very recognizable.  To them, writing is a competitive sport rather than passionate lovemaking.  No matter how many original voices they still, they will insist that the progress of the craft demands that all writers write like them in the hopes of slanting the field towards their acclaim.  They are not teachers at all.

Real teachers learn from their students as much as they instruct them.  With poetry, especially, a teacher can convey their understanding of the craft, can even test the students on that understanding, but for creative writing exercises a dialogue is required where the teacher asks the student what they were trying to accomplish and suggest different ways of achieving their goals, ways to improve and to correct minor errors.

I am glad that you now have a real teacher.

Best wishes on your writing affair,

Carl Peter

I guess no one sets out to do what they don't need to do--whether its a musical instrument or a pen. But that calling is only to enter into the appreniceship of a craft. Here, there are only 2 decicions: to do that craft well, or to bend it fitting yourself into it.

I hear you that you have a need to write, but what to write about?
That you sense that silence of the inbetween moment when a lot of little voices start talking all at once--but all they want is someone to lead them into form.

The only way to do that is to read, read, read, and find point blankly
the kind of voice you feel most connected to. So what kind of writer you want to be? Poetry, short stores, a good reporter?

Just a few ideas for now:
1.It's been said that we all have one good story in ourselves, and we just keep re-writing it in different ways.

2. Now, would you like to write and talk to yourself, or would you like to communicate with other people. Here you'll have to make a decision of how you want to speak and how you want people to listen.

3. Learn all the nuances of the language we live in. Read poetry, novels, newspapers, and listen to radio, TV. Watch News, documentaries, and if you have time try some art museums. It's not important what those languages are saying but how you relate to them and find your own voice.

I don't know if this will help, but that's how I got to my test tube babies.

Feel free to write me
John

It will never end if you really love writing. It is infinitely more pleasurable if your works stir others and make them react. Getting your message across forcefully and convincingly is sure proof that you are writing well and effectively. God bless!
