Speculations
It will be fun to speculate on the moves of the GOP over the next few years, but the choices you discuss would not, in my opinion, be good for the party. Palin is mostly a poster child for the Social Conservatives, but so was George II, and that clearly failed. Her positions on abortion and gay marriage, and her hostility to science will always limit her appeal. And Newt was convicted by the Ethics Committee in his own House of multiple violations, not to mention his extracurricular activities that ended his marriage. The first should disqualify him from any national political office, and the second should at least give the Religious Right pause.
So a broader search is in order.
