My older sis, until she was in her 70s, went to u-pick farms for fruits
and veggies, did her own canning every summer, even though it meant taking time off from a job. It was a false economy in my guesstimation, she'd have made more from the day's work than she could possibly have saved over the cost of the food. She loved the connection to our pioneer grandparents, the work of putting by and preserving for winter. I still feel like I should be putting in a garden and standing over a stove on hot summer days to make tomato sauce and can peaches. But the guilt passes.

My grandparents had their own garden, so they canned a lot!
They also took my brothers and I on trips every summer. We always drove. Hardly ever flew. They would usually borrow a van from a friend since the cars would be too crowded. We had to be quiet too. You never wanted my grandfather to get angry! LOL

great post,
my parents enjoyed riding around in the country for hours .... my brother and sis and me jammed like sardines in the back, we would always end up fighting, " Mike's touching me !" I would tell. Dad could keep one hand on the wheel and reach around and smack us..OMG lol Then we would take a finger and put it as close to a leg without touching. We would drive each other nuts doing this for most of the ride....lol
