Do you really believe that this issue is that simplistic? Where admittedly it is difficult for us heterosexuals to comprehend why the gay community is so adamant about having their unions defined by name as marriage when same sex unions accomplish the same thing, there is far more to this particular situation. Thousands of people have not taken to the streets in protest over the meaning of a single word.

The basis of their protest is twofold. First and foremost they refuse to accept anything less than full marriage rights defined as such. At the core of this objection is the issue of human rights, in that one group is determined not to be denied the same rights as heterosexuals in the sense that they refuse to accept a different classification or status for their marriages. The second issue is the ability of a religious institution to petition a secular government for a referendum premised upon a religious agenda to affect legislation.

You're missing the point, Gome...

In fairness, in California, registered domestic partners (whether married or not) have ALL the privileges of married couples – without exception. Consequently, there is NO issue of fairness. Those who advocate marriage between same-gender people are simply trying to change the meaning of a word by legislation. This is not a legitimate function of legislation.

Furthermore, any clergy can perform “marriage” ceremonies. The only difference is that the certificate that gets filed for same-gender unions is a Domestic Partnership certificate instead of a Marriage certificate.
