Re: Your friend would do well to understand how important other aspects

Ciel,

You are so right.  Kim has a major focus on food due to her own history.  It's one of those things that makes it rough on her with her kids.  She is trying to do everyone soooooooooo right that she forgets that sometimes the right thing is to go jump in mud puddles with them!

Your friend would do well to understand how important other aspects

of her relationship with her kids are, besides making sure they eat 'right.'  Kids need flexibility, they need Mom to sometimes be a pal, to sometimes indulge.  Hot dogs are a lot less healthy than a nice low-fat pretzel.

If she feeds her kids real bread (they might not like it at first, but white bread and nice soft fluffy bread really are glue in the guts)  then one of the peculiarities of digestion makes the occasional pretzel's white flour much less of a threat to blood-sugar levels, if that's what she is worried about.

I'd encouragage her to read up on the glycemic index, and then to take her kids out for ice cream sundaes.  After a good healthy, balanced meal!

I say all this without knowing what the circumstancs really are, whether diabetes is an issue, or in what other ways she shows her kids love.  I just remember what it was to have a mother that always put housekeeping and proper diet ahead of all my other needs...  and how much it meant to me, those rare occasions when she dumped routine for a trip to the beach, or made fudge on an impulse at bedtime...

Re: Stressing over the perfect diet...
Hear! Hear!   It amazes me the things we worry over.  Honestly I don't think it's the food that causes high blood pressure etc... it's all the stinking worry we give it.

Stressing over the perfect diet...
...can actually cause ill health more than occasional junk food can.
If all perfectionists would lighten up a bit, and not just about junk food, but about life in general, she would actually feel and be better.
And, like one nutritionist said, it's not so much what we eat, it's what we don't eat that harms us.
In other words, if we include a liberal amount of what we should eat in our diets, occasional junk food won't matter.

The only reason you don't understand she invites all of New Joisey is that you're not Italian. I have a couple of Italian friends who invite all of New Joisey on Kim's off-days! But, unlike your friend, they're not perfectionists, they're more like a bit on the sloppy side, quite endearing, actually, lol.

But it's time you got rid of that Redi-Whip and get with the real stuff you whip yourself...

Ex-Turpi
Kim is a wonderful friend and I wouldn't trade her.  It's just a little comical at times to consider how we became friends because we are very, very different!

I have now dated two Italian women. Yes, do not try to understand, just go along. They are great women. I am like you, I never even studied for an exam; my secretary hates that I am a procrastinator. Just be yourself. If my experience is any indication, Kim will be loyal and loving. You may be luckier than you realise.

Re: I'm Italian and I don't invite all of those people over for dinner. LOL
LOL Shelly!  They wouldn't come anyway cuz you have dial up, it would take two weeks just to get the invites out!

Hi, Sweetie!  How have you been?!  I've checked in on you a couple times enough to know you have a whole new life!  I don't get to get on here as much as I used to because I work ALL THE TIME and my job doesn't allow for much blog time or opportunity.  My best friend and I are opposites, too.....but, we complement each other perfectly....I don't know if we could actually live together, but we travel together very well and we are great for getting feedback from because it's not just an "echo" from someone just like yourself....that's a big value in good and bad times!

Now my great-grandparents...well, that's another story! LOL

They did this every sunday and holiday!  Then again, they had 14 kids!

I find that Kim and I are a very odd match.  Truthfully, she is my best friend because she is also one of the most loving and giving human beings I have ever met.  Somehow that old addage of "Opposites attract" fits us.

That is a splendid post. I enjoyed reading it so much, because I have discovered that I have personality elements of you and Kim: I'm a perfectionist and I never eat junk food. On the other hand there are moments when I rely exclusively on the parachute and love every second of it. Do you still wonder why she is your best friend??
