OTA, I have been writing on this topic since my first day on Blogit,
and thinking about such things since I was old enough to wonder.  It is fascinating to me, too!

I really like this train of thought. Does God have to be real? Is God less real if we do not form the word of with our mouth? If we label him Father, Allah or Satan? If we are silent about "God" what then? Your thoughts on the role of parents in the creation of an individuals concept of God is facinating. As for me, God IS. ~Peace, OTA

Sam, the ego is like skin--
it helps us tell ourselves from our surroundings.  Ego is simply your self-image, and a good healthy, strong ego is not a problem.  The problem is when ego becomes diseased, out of balance, toxic, defensive...  I don't think we should strive to eliminate it, but to make it well.  Then, maybe consider doing without it.

Interesting thoughts, Ciel.
What is real to one person is not necessarily real to another because we are all different.  We see things differently and God relates to each of us on our own plane.  To answer your title question, yes, God has to be real to really matter, but it is a phenomenological reality.  As the lyrics from the old hymn say,  "My God is real, for I can feel Him in my soul."

Right on
I think it is the intentions, feelings and the effect these have on other people, society in general and all the rest of life that is crucial and not the words, reasons and explanations.
