Re: sounds like you are fitting in nicely.
Thanks, I believe I am.  I am happy to be in my niche spot "On writing" which is who I really am instead of pimping for votes (and money) in humor.  Maryellen

Yeah, thanks, I use those too.  I also like www.poewar.com because they break down the writing jobs into categories.  They even have a "literary" category which is right up my alley.  I was practically a poetry major in college.  I saw a wonderful job on Poe teaching poetry appreciation to disadvantaged kids  at the Y.  (I just realized I can't see what I'm typing here).  I really wanted it but I was too scared.  I taught alternative high school English classes in Chicago and it was a terrible experience.  I had my life threatened because school policy was that if you didn't pass "boring" old English you couldn't play basketball no matter how good you were.  I left one day crying and could never go back.

I am amazed to hear the most popular woman at Blogit say she's anti-social.  Maryellen

The three main sources I use to get my freelance work are these:

http://www.freelancewritinggigs.com/

http://www.sunoasis.com/

I have others that I check on occasion, too...

BTW, the $250 and $650 were for career magazines in New York and
for one in KC.  I used to write business profiles and make $150 for those, if I remember right...because I'm such an introvert, I love working online, but I'm not quitting my day job, that's for sure! I work PT as a Communications Specialist...I do lots of writing, design work, and web content/maintenance on the job for about 20-25 hours a week...but I love the challenge and variety that come with freelancing...was writing for Travelape.com, too...Made about $170 - $300 with them...just a variety of destination descriptions.

Coming from the offline markets where I was getting $250 to $650 per
article to the online markets was a terrible shock...online markets pay horribly.  I've just learned to write faster and but have taken a heck of a loss writing online.  I won't write for less than $10 per 300 words.  Like you, I think I deserve better, but to be honest with you, it's tough finding markets online that pay $100 an article...I've made more writing press releases ($50 a page online) than writing articles I've researched and written.  I don't think I've made more than $75 for any one thing online.  It's pathetic...but I still do it.

I looked at the Hub but I think I'm too dumb for it. I got confused.
Can I ask you frankly what you would like to get paid when you answer a freelance ad for, say, a 600 word article on something non-technical that is in your area of research and expertise?  When I wrote for Helium.com's Marketplace I was lucky to get between $35-75.  I feel I should be getting $100.  The Elance assignment I bid on and might get was to write about 60 home remedies with 150 words on each.  Thinking of how I lost my first bid for being too high, I bid $80.  Today I got to see what others bid.  I was by far the lowest.  All were over $100.  A couple were in the $250 range and a few in the $150-175 range. What would you charge do you think?  What kind of ads do you answer.  I got a freelance gig from an ad for a Russian magazine that said they were going to pay me $10 an article.  The first assisgnment took me about five hours of research alone.  It just wasn't worth it.  If you're uncomfortable talking about money, forget I asked, okay?

Hey, I love reading you and we have a lot in common! I get most of my

writing gigs at Debbie Ng at Freelance Gigs and a couple of other sites...Have you tried Bright Hub?  I write there, too...$10 an article for at least 300 words...they're sort of technical though, but you might check em out...I'm "Ariala" there, too, LOL...I've also written for LovetoKnow.com, Family.com, and of course Associated Content (AC)...I don't bid on jobs...too frustrating...I mostly answer ads and get gigs that way.  Has worked out well!  Tried Blue Mountain, too, but they rejected my work...argh!

As for the humorous cancer cards, I wrote two, but they weren't too funny...just light-hearted.
