- Go to And did I make that appointment ? - no of course not
We have become so prone to political correctness that we analyze everything we do instead of just doing if for its worth and pleasure. Oh! I wish the world could rewind a little.

I think this post is as interesting because of what you did not say as
much as for what you wrote. Interesting commentary on chapels. Amazing the thought that goes into these buildings, the architect's plan, the interior design, where to place the candles, the angle of light coming through stained glass, the placement of objects of worship -- all organized and focused toward creating a sense of awe and peace. I hope the visit has brought a resolution of the unease that sent you on the quest in the first place. :)

mneme, I'm afraid that the churches here are locked except for scheduled services--at least the ones that I know. It's too bad there are vandals and such that make it necessary. Thank you for visiting all my blog posts and for leaving such nice comments.

beautiful and sad story
I lived in France for a while when I was about 20, and one night came across a man who had collapsed half in half out of a telephone box. He was in a bad way and muttering 'ma femme'. I was frozen with fear, not having a clue what to do. Fortunately the ambulance came, but in my mind I have constructed lots of stories since about what he might have meant- was he calling for his wife, or had he just heard his wife had left him, etc etc. My daughter has just moved to Chile for love, so I'm trying to put some pennies aside to get there- I wish it was as close as the south of France!

Strange as it may sound coming from me, but I think you will understand that I too enjoy the sense of peace I feel when I am in a quiet old church, and I share your regret that it is an experience many of us no longer have.
I also used to enjoy the ringing of church bells on Sundays, but the few churches left in our town have all fallen silent...
