Re: In my mind, Columbus and his efforts have become an allegory
True, Columbus is a hero of the Age of Exploration, and the motive for his trip was to find a better way of traveling to India.  Those aspects of his life can still be inspirational.

Re: I have a suggestion for an addition to your reading list.
Read it.  Loved it.  But now I think nearly everyone in America would have been better off if the Rebels had lost our Sacred Revolution, and the Colonies had stayed under British rule.  Nasty bits about Columbus there, too.

I have a suggestion for an addition to your reading list.
"A People's History of the United States," by Howard Zinn.  It should be required reading in every high school in America, but it generally isn't: quite a surprising account of our heritage and background.

In my mind, Columbus and his efforts have become an allegory
representative of Freedom.  That great Freedom in all of us that longs to be expressed unencumbered.
