I was taught in a logic class

any statement that begins with "If" is automatically untrue, because it cannot be proven.  As the old nursery rhyme goes -- "if wishes were horses we'd all take a ride, if turnips were watches I'd have one by my side."

We can't say if GWBush hadn't been made president by the Supreme Court even though he didn't have the most popular votes, any number of things would be different, possibly better. All we can do is believe in our hearts that the other nominees would have been better at diplomacy, might have kept us from making war on a non-involved (in terrorism) country, and some of the money spent on war might have gone to health care.

What I can say with reasonable certainty -- under the last Democrat administration our country had a fiscal surplus, unemployment was down, and Wall Street was not crumbling.

P.S.
I delete 99% of unsolicited emails, especially political ones.  Just one of my crazy Dem ideas to keep me mostly sane.

Long Answer to a Short Question

Krisles, I'm on temporary hiatus from Blogit (largely because I am so sad about the divisive spirit lately), but couldn't resist responding to your question.

I think your question is a bit broad to be answered effectively.  In what regard do you ask how things would be different?  Foreign policy?  Health care for the poor?  The environment?  Specifics would help, as I don't believe even die-hard partisans would be able to say their candidate of choice would have conquered every front.  Certainly it would be difficult at the very least to present a point-by-point side-by-side comparison of one leader versus another.  I am not a politician, nor do I have any interest to be.  Like most, I go about half with my gut.

I am not an "avid" Democrat, falling more center/left.  At times I have voted Republican.  If the person is right for the job, they get my vote regardless of party affiliation.  But I'll do my best to answer you anyway.

It's my honest belief that most of what is happening today was meant to happen, and would have happened regardless of who was in office.  I believe in prophecy, self-fulfilling and otherwise, and I believe in the power of the collective human spirit.  However, the countries we are at conflict with don't necessarily believe in the spirit of unity.  Rather, any great ideas we come up with are soundly and emphatically tossed out as so much infidel rhetoric.

That said, I can't honestly say that we would have done better abroad had Kerry or Gore taken office.  Neither do I believe they would have done worse.  It's difficult to ignore the fact that these guys are better communicators.  That doesn't make them better politicians or leaders.  It just leaves less room for the message getting lost.  Trouble is, Democrats and Republicans don't agree on what that message should be.  Would Gore have taken Republican ideas into Iraq, for example, and seen them through to completion?  I doubt it.  He would have done great at carrying out the Democrats' plan (whatever that is).

The environment.  Well.  Again, Dems and Reps differ on their ideas of what's really wrong with the environment, whether not it's man-made, who should be held responsible.  I believe Gore would have done better at taking care of the environment simply because he spends so much time already taking care of what he believes is wrong.

Anyway, I'm on hiatus.  So I'll summarize by saying that it's sort of a toss-up as far as I'm concerned.  I can sum it up with some simple statements:

Republicans are great at getting all things Republican accomplished.  So naturally Republicans will find plenty of evidence of their leaders' effectiveness.

Democrats are great at getting all things Democrat accomplished.  So naturally Democrats will find plenty of evidence of their leaders' effectiveness.  It would take hours and hours to come up with specific examples of how I personally usually, not always, not every time, but most often prefer Democrat.  Ask for some specifics, and I'll do my best to find them for you.

God Bless and Keep You,

Myrrhage

I am always dumbfounded when I get politcal emails.
Most who know me know where I stand and even so they also know Politics is a forbidden subject with me anymore no matter what the stance.  Yet, some still feel the need to bombard me with their opinion in my email.  I have become less polite about this these days and started asking "Why exactly did you think I would want to read this one?"
