Re: Re: Re: mordent
The Big dog role is due to pass on to India and China soon, if current trends continue and they want to throw their incrementally increasing weight around.  America has been an inspiration for other people of ex-European descent (I can't really speak for anybody else) around the world for some time and this is perhaps why we have been watching so closely.  But the admiration has been turning into it's opposite lately.

Re: Re: mordent

As always I believe in the human nature thing. What I don't like is so many idiots around the world seem to want to emulate Americans.

You see I'm big on keeping ones Identity and it appears many don't have one.

The only defense I have for America in this situation is the big dog on the block theory. That is no matter what America does good or bad it will be hated because it is the big dog on the block.

It doesn't matter how much it gives to the world it will only be noted for throwing it's weight around. I just wish the world would stop watching our TV, dressing and adopting our ways.

Truly tragic
but maybe there are signs of light?

I agree, it is tragic..
We as a people have become de-sensitized, I believe by the corporate influences of self-interest and instant gratification as a means of filling the emptiness inherent in losing our sense of community, of even paying attention, let alone caring about those who are more fragile. Shop til you drop, couch potatoes, our children and elderly warehoused and forgotten, easy pledges to a flag and to the places and personalities of worship instead of living the real meaning of spiritualism and circle-hood. Not all of us have fallen prey and generosity and charity haven't completely disappeared, but as a whole, we Americans have become coldly self serving - many of my fellow citizens will think I'm overly harsh, probably un-patriotic, but the statistics and our overall standing in the world tell the story true.

Re: mordent
We non-americans often experience America as a country, and particularly its current administration, as a stumbling monster who attempts to lead and save the whole world whilst it doesn't even seem capable of saving itself.

Re: No laughs in this neck of the forest..
This is the greatest tragedy of all for me, that people sometimes seem to unify only when they face a common enemy that has direct influence on their own lives, like poverty and starvation.  Many of us dream about peaceful and prosperous living but when affluence is only in the hands of a few the rest tear them down whilst stepping over their fellow human beings lives and dead bodies to try and get to the top themselves, like vultures who fight over the last piece of carrion.

Any particular part of the show or just the whole show?

No laughs in this neck of the forest..
can't see many trees either..Fear and subliminal hate mongering - be it for economic strangulation of the working classes or for expansion of wars, military budgets, aka empire -have been tragically effective thus far in silencing the masses. When hunger and homelessness strike on a large scale, as is beginning, I think then, finally, so shall we the people unified.

Black Comedy
Sadly, the current circus in American corridors of power could be traveling to a venue near you.  A lot rests on the questionable foundation of the American economy.
