Luz--I love your reviews!
You're right, a lot of the side characters are enigmas--and at that time of the world, so many actual things were perceived that way! In fact, most of the main characters are enigmatic, too, especially to themselves!
Never occurred to me, either, that Shrike might have a taste for human snacks. In fact, we never do see him eat. Maybe I should amend that. It wouldn't hurt to see him eating fruit... In fact, a notion is stirring...
I've been working on the next part, and have some concerns down the road, that it just gets weak about the time Turlough gets to Rome. I think it will need some large rewriting. But I will have some more segments up soon.

I hope it does, ravenmarie!
If you write one, or a poem or find any other sort of inspiration, post it in your blog, and then post a link here, so we can come find it!

Hey, Ciel! (Ch.17-Heretics Review BWC)
sorry for posting this here instead of at the end of Ch.17, but for some reason my internet is acting weird whenever i try to comment on that particular page.
anyway, the chapter: Columbina's new friend Shrike, I don't know what to make of him yet. Visiually, he is very entertaining to imagine and already am quite fond of the character. Like almost everyone in The Heretics Shrike is an enigma, and VERY bizarre among the realistic world (vampires and all). As for Turlough's dream, it was absolutely beautiful, and I think I've gained much insight into his mind through it. Yet another surprise at the end of the chapter when Turlough ends up a captive. The one very questionable part was when Columbina stayed with Shrike for the night. Granted, you do note how shocked she is at her own soft-heartedness toward him, it seems odd that she would trust the creature not to dine on her flesh (as she knows some humanoid creatures to do.) But perhaps that one action is supposed to be mysterious. I am looking forward to Part II!

Re: No I'm no good at this stuff.
Did you ever see that movie Dead Poet's Society? There is a scene in there between a kid who says he has no poetry in him, and the teacher who shows him that he does!
I'll bet you do too!
