There are still hermits around the world, in various religious traditions, including buddhists and christians. Thomas Merton was a pretty famour hermit in the US.. though a funny variety of hermit as he always seemed to have people coming to visit him in his hermitage. But he did write some beautiful essays about the solitary life.
