I live in Memphis, the city said to have the second highest number in gun related traumas, and I do not own a gun. I have lived in Chicago for four and a half years, and never once did I ever feel threatened or in danger, and I did not own a gun then. I lived in Milwaukee for 17 months, and again, I did not own a gun. I remember in Chicago missing my flight at O"Hare, and taking a car ride with some couple who offered to take me back downtown, after a taxi refused to take credit card. Yes, they could have killed me, or kidnapped me and held me for ransom, but instead they delivered me home, and gave me twenty dollars cash to keep only for emergencies to prevent another taxi incident. I am not saying that not every one is dangerous, but I don't think it provides this sense of security you seem to describe. Instead I think it instills this fear within us, it makes us paranoid as to who we believe to be dangerous. It makes us no longer feel safe in our own homes. It creates a dependency. This dependency appears to be present in many gang members and drug dealers. They cannot get their members or buyers to abide without threatening to take their life with a gun. It is that gun that puts them at an advantage. Sarah Palin, who is a lifetime member of the NRA and mother of five, should be eating her words. I doubt that she would be too happy to hear that her kid who has down syndrome was playing with her gun unable to distinguish it between a toy own and accidently shot some one. Most gun crimes are said to occur by accident, and god forbid, you accidently get shot down.
