Re: From an Australian's Point of View

Living in the U.S., and having grown up in the West (of Wild West), I have always known my neighbors could have guns, but I also know most won't use them except in dire need, but there are problems.  When I was a child, a younger child in my home town got mad at his neighber, a ten-year-old who was teasing him, so the six-year-old ran into his Dad's bedroom and got a rifle.  He shot the ten-year-old through the chest.  I have to wonder where all the adults were, and why, if they insist on having a rifle in the house, it wasn't locked up where a six-year-old couldn't get it.  But to make a law requiring such a thing would be a violation of the Dad's constitutional rights . . .

We live with this sort of thing because we are such a principled people, the last, best hope of something or other.  Can't quite remember what.

Re: From an Australian's Point of View
I live in NZ now and there doesn't seem to be a problem with guns here.  The most dangerous thing in NZ society is probably a boyracer under the influence of something or other.  Back home in SA knifes, bottles, anything really, is enough to have you live as if in prison and then some have AK47's and stolen police R1 rifles.  Laws have been issued to cut back on gun ownership, but this only disturbs the balance between lawful and unlawful weapons, which has most arms in criminal hands now.  A difficult situation to control.

From an Australian's Point of View
Yes I suppose that most people love their own country, even those living under dire circumstances hoping that it will get better.  So of course I believe that Australia is the 'last best hope on Earth'  as do most Australians.  However you may be interested to know that many people here in Australia think that America would be a scary place to live in and a common reason given is because of the non-existant gun laws, which is not the case here.  I can hardly imagine how it would feel to know that my next door neighbour could have a gun in his house....gee I would really hope that he was a sane and decent person in case I ever upset him.  And I just cant imagine how I would feel sending my kids to school.  How do you's cope with this?  Or is the picture not as bad as it is portrayed here?
