I think you are confusing 2 different issues. The 3 words rule of thumb you are citing pertains to the use of keywords and the subsequent penalization by search engines if the same keywords are overused on a website. It is more of a guideline than a hard and fast rule but if it is adhered to, it eliminates the possibility of being penalized for "keyword stuffing"
I agree that the internet is a den of theives, it is also a cesspool of deception. If you are going to be doing self publishing (blogging) it may be a good idea to brush up on copyright laws and guidelines pertaining to electronic media. The primary importance of knowing these things is to understand when in our borrowing, citing, referencing and using the material of others, that we are not breaching copyright laws.

It sure is thieves world in internet. I read that every consecutive 3 words should not be similar, elese you would be penalised with the copyright issues.
Anyways, for people who cannot copyright thier stuff they are always suceptible from leachers waiting to suck aways the good stuff. There are both pros and cons too.
