Luz_Briar - Re: my turn!
Yes, hate is rather a strong word and quite often used in exaggeration, or in place of more suitable words such as contempt, disdain or dislike. The not so surprising part about this blog was that no one who really irrationally hates others has stopped in to comment.

my turn!
hate is a rather strong word. it's equal to love in its emotional capacity. well, i'd have to say i don't hate ignorant people. and i don't hate militant people. but when a person is Both ignorant and militant, sometimes i can't help but harbor disdain toward them. the KKK is a perfect example. any group that stupid and that agressive merits hate.

Hilow - I view that as simply an honest assessment
With the word "hate" as you are using it varying in degree from mild disdain to loathing. I'm with you on these things. I cannot think of an individual aside from Osama Bin Laden that I hate.

I hate people who talk on their cell phones in traffic - the ones who drive too slow or too fast, because they can't do three things at once. I hate gang bangers. I hate hookers and prostitutes. I hate people who milk the system for an eternity instead of stepping up and finding a way to cut their own trail. I hate stupid on every possible level that stupid exists.
Despite being so full of hatred and despite how much I despise certain mentalities, groups, etc., I can't name one person that I hate as a whole. I hate no ONE and yet, I hate alot of THINGS.

Harderup - Re: Mousehop - Re: Fear and Self-Loathing
I agree as well and tend to view some groups and ideas in much the same light.

mousehop - the only real name I can think of is Osama Bin Laden
I can say honestly that I hate him and all he represents. Outside of pious pinheads such as him and possibly his mindless minions, I cannot think of any individuals worthy of such disdain.

Mousehop - Re: Fear and Self-Loathing
I agree with you. I don't think I can put a single person on a list, but like you, there are groups and ideas and actions I really hate.
For me to hate someone personally I would have to know him/her.
If someone did something terrible to my children I would probably get my first name on that list. I am against death penalty, but if someone killed my family I could probably change my mind.
I think hate and love is a very personal feeling.

Fear and Self-Loathing
I haven't made a list of people I hate. I lack that kind of courage. But there are a lot of groups and ideas I could get along without (even if I'm not naming them aloud).

Talion_ - that's the issue with the word "hate" itself
Like "love" it has number of different contextual meanings. Then it is overused as a means of exaggeration in our language, as an example; I don't really "hate" Vernor's Ginger Ale, I simply wonder how anyone would prefer it over drinking turpentine. Then as you imply, it varies dramaticaly in degree.

cantey_1975 - same here, I try to tell myself I hate no one but when the question is reflected upon, a list begins to form.

I can honestly say I don't hate anyone simply because my personal definition of the word is for a feeling of utter contempt and complete disdain so strong that I couldn't allow the person who inspired it to live. Sure, there's a long list of people I definitely don't like for a variety of valid (at least to me) reasons, but thankfully, no one has ever done anything to me (or those I loved) so heinous to warrant true, undilluted "hatred."

I try to tell myself that I hate no one
but that would make me a liar. I hate a-holes that hijack, twist, and bastardize religions, especially mine, for a self serving agenda.
