because these leaders make it acceptable in the minds of those who follow them feel justified in their habitual judgement of others.  It's all just another form of rationalization.

Re: "All hurricanes are acts of God, because God controls the heavens."

Luz_Briar - I cannot think of a more classless thing to do than state publicly that a city which has just suffered a major catastrophe was singled out by his God for judgement. My tolerance for pinheads like this has completely disappeared as I get older, if he had of said this in my company, I would have walked up to him and slapped him in the head for being so insensitive, obtuse and so incredibly stupid.

To derive these types of moronic conclusions from religious beliefs, a great deal of denial, willful blindness and lack of reason must be applied liberally to the man's motivations. Which of course are to sell his brand of religion by appealing to people's prejudices. He is no more a holy man than I am a Chippendale dancer. These Falwellian characters are a major detriment to any progressive society but sadly, they are not viewed as such by far too many people. All we can hope for is that at some point in the future, these types of chuckleheads become more and more marginalized in society.

Re: there are people that are so far out of the loop and so far into the morass
Xeno-x - the numbers are truly scary and it makes you wonder how things got this way? How can so many people simply dismiss the types of lunatic ravings that guys like this routinely come up with? It's not like he's a solitary nutcase with a few followers like Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist inbreds, this guy heads a church that has 20,000 members and his lunacy is broadcast on TV and radio in a number of different countries.

"All hurricanes are acts of God, because God controls the heavens."
wow. haha. Gome, i'm from New Orleans, i was born here and i returned after the effin' hurricane. i'd have to ask this guy if he believes in his own bullshit, or if he just says it to be saying something.  i remember reading about his guy before, and how he was out to destroy Harry Potter (a fictional wizard character). i didnt know he had it out for a whole city (New Orleans) as well.

there are people that are so far out of the loop and so far into the morass
of religious fanaticism that they embrace irrational ridiculousness to the extreme.

This guy is just an extreme example of the various mythologies that much of Christianity embraces.

What's scary is that he's not alone, and his group is not the only one.  The numbers are scary.

FineYoungSinger - the part I don't get is much the same as Pat Robertson in why so many people subscribe to his nonsensical worldview. This guy is inviting the end of the world and has a long list of people he promotes hatred towards.

Troosha - Re: gomedome
In that case Amsterdam, Tijuana and especially Vegas had better be careful, just to name a few.

Not only did he claim Katrina occurred because of the level of sin in New Orleans he was more specific in stating it was because of the upcoming Gay Pride Parade.  From an NPR interview Hagee gave to Terry Gross in 2006:

God caused Hurricane Katrina to wipe out New Orleans because it had a gay pride parade the week before and was filled with sexual sin

JH: All hurricanes are acts of God, because God controls the heavens. I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, and they were recipients of the judgment of God for that.

The newspaper carried the story in our local area, that was not carried nationally, that there was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came. And the promise of that parade was that it would was going to reach a level of sexuality never demonstrated before in any of the other gay pride parades.

So I believe that the judgment of God is a very real thing. I know there are people who demur from that, but I believe that the Bible teaches that when you violate the law of God, that God brings punishment sometimes before the Day of Judgment, and I believe that the Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans.
