Re: Progress
I agree.  I think the only way to come together is to be open to at least hearing each other out, even  if we never agree, we can at least agree to disagree.  Thank you for taking the time to read this.  I hope you will visit my blog again.

Progress
I find this news encouraging.  If all of us, regardless of our understanding of reality, can come to understand that we need each other and that the only route to meaningful cooperation for mutual benefit is open discussion and a willingness to agree to differ I think we can build up societies that will have a much better atmosphere and healthier communal support structure than we will ever have if we just bluntly deny each others value as humans.

Monolog and dialog
My personal experience in discussions with Christians about science and my atheism has been frustrating because even among the educated (formally educated indicated by university degrees) there is a profound disinterest in engaging scientific fact and reality when there is a fear that it will conflict with accepted belief.  I know many physicians who deny evolution, but I have yet to meet anyone (yes, anyone) who understands evolution, and is familiar with the scientific evidence, who denies evolution.  So dialog at a meaningful level is impossible until both sides have adequate background.  And They don't seem to want to make the effort.

Yeah, that's meant to be provocative.  I've read the Bible a dozen times, cover to cover, and so on, so I'm arrogant enough to claim some understanding of the Christian point of view.  But whom do I discuss it with?  Who knows enough biology that I won't end up lecturing on the basics for six months?
