I love your poem especially the opening phrases about loneliness, sorrow, pain, betrayal, abuse, maltreatment. These certainly cause depression, even deep depression. Keep writing

  Outplays cynical reproach
I love the compassion in this poem, and though i disagree and must say i believe it can be a disease, this is still a caring sentiment. prescriptions cannot cure a person unless they want to be cured, and so your point is true.

Yes, Depression is a part of my life, even an official diagnosis.  Depression is many things, including complete loss of function and staring at the wall or the floor.  Drugs may help, therapy may help, poetry often helps.  And I sleep too much.  May all our struggles help us rise.

Very accurate poem Jen.... depression is a terrible thing ... but its not a disease unless it has no tangible cause.  If a person is abused, mistreated, or hurt like you mention is natural to be depressed. Depression in that case is just a reaction to circumstance.  It is only when that "hidden" black" descends out of no where and colors all. and there is no joy at all that depression becomes an all consuming sickness that robs the person of everything.  I hope you are ok Jen.  Love you as always my friend.

Dear Jen, I would beg to differ slightly..............

depression is a Dis-ease - an alert that your body or mind is not at ease with itself; potions and pills only deal with the physical symptoms my friend; the rest needs a lot of work on our part to cure the root cause; thanks for sharing my friend; take care of you; many blessings and thanks

It is the color of hidden black
  I love that line :)
Sometimes a prescription is needed to be able to take the first step out of the depression though

Maybe it now and then can ...
... be like a vacuum ... a 'place/space' where rest is needed, a vital and necessary withdrawal, before coming back at stage (the living) - a good poem, tells about deep reflections -
