And, thank you, Aardi, for your insightful comment! I am glad that Science is there, because like the old saying that "water seeks its own level," the facts, too, will follow suit. Now, daily, even among Scientific circles, those who place too much reliance on Evolution are walking in dookey that is getting deeper and deeper!

The lamps of the Soul
By now science has answers for almost all questions relating to the "material" aspect of perceptual apparatus like the eye, but it is still completely in the dark when it comes to the observer of the information gathered and interpreted by the organism. Philosophers have also not been able to come to a satisfactory answer. I've seen some pretty hilarious efforts by physiologists on this subject as they trap themselves in their own words. The problem with this is that words (thoughts) are just more information that the observer is aware of and just like no picture/map/diagram can show the observer of the visual information, no amount of words can describe the observer of thoughts accurately. These two approaches are doomed from the word "go" on this subject simply because their methodology is incapable of proving or disproving any facet of awareness.
On the other hand every living being has awareness as the most fundamental aspect of being a being and there has for thousands of years been people who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of coming to grips with this most extraordinary yet most "given" of all "facts" about life. They have been the ones who started and kept alive the Great Religious movements that many scientists and philosophers wish would disappear (because they keep on highlighting the incompetence of these paths to knowledge to deal with the most obvious fact of life).
Fortunately we do not need anything that science or philosophy can offer us to come to grips with this core characteristic of Life. We are that which is aware and no amount of arguing or experimenting can change that fact. Spiritual practice is the path of knowledge that provides the answers that are directly experiential and thus irrefutable for those who walk the path of spiritual gnosis. A good (but due to the limitations of language never completely sufficient) way of relating the organs with awareness is to say that the organs of perception are the lamps of the soul whereby the shared world of phenomena is lighted and brought in focus so that the will and the heart(feeling) can engage it meaningfully. In yet other words; these organs evolved to give awareness ever increasing effective means of negotiating the environment meaningfully. This means that evolution is steered by intelligence and not by dumb luck. It is this aspect of reality that most materialist evolutionists seem unable to grasp because they are trying to get into awareness from the side of the observed instead of the observer.
