Re: Two stories
I most certainly do not imply that trees only fall when pushed.  The gist of this was to point out that it doesn't matter how "right" and rationally correct and practically valid our hypothesis about whatever may seem, it can still be inaccurate in part or even completely wrong.  A real scientist (in my opinion) will always remain open for the possibility of error and will keep on challenging known theories until they are proven beyond any doubt to be of practical use, which is ultimately the use of scientific knowledge to my mind (practical application and not to explain reality.  Reality is to be experienced, not explained)

I'm like that myself sometimes, aren't we all?

Re: my intuition can be very smart and convincing me in these ways
Intuition sometimes serve us better than logical deduction.  This is a particularly hard pill to swallow for people who take great pride in their capability to remain rational at all times.

Re: Don't we all?
Ultimately it is more important for humanity as a whole to find solace than to know exactly what happened in the past, but there are those among us who simply have to dig deeper, which is a good thing in our global village, otherwise the many views that have diverted from the root will stay in conflict forever and become lost in a myriad fantasies whilst forgetting what it was about originally.

Two stories
You say the last owner based his conclusion on previous experience, so his hypothesis was hardly absurd.  Not accurate in this case, but his fault lies in his evaluation of further data after he made his first guess.  Definitely a problem is science, but self-correcting with regard to future occurrences of falling trees, and the discovery of principles on the causes of tree falls.  Or do you mean to imply that trees only fall when pushed?

and when it matters, it is on track.

Don't we all?

His own version gives the tree character and an interesting history. Stories may be passed from person to person with every gap filled with a new little thought or perception changing the truth. It may give shadow and refuge and have tales of healing touches from a tree that survived the rain and storm. People may gather under it to seek wisdom and relief.

In time it will not be important that it is just a tree that a man happened to tilt.
