Thanks, Kabu!  I can't claim entire credit for the notion--I have been watching so many dog training shows, and reading books my dog-training daughter recommends, full of all kinds of great ideas!

I really recommend THE OTHER END OF THE LEASH,  the one I am reading now.

Making lots of new friends.  and what an excellent idea for training your pup.  My 3 pups love everybody but will let you know when someone comes near their space or near my bed when we are sleeping      -our family..teehee

Still, he shows no reticence about announcing the stirrings of anyone within reach of his senses!  We have begun lessons on expressing our appreciation of his good intentions, and on the word, "Enough!"

I think it is a beautiful idea to have people give Davy treats - he'll learn that people are nice. Having said that, not all people are nice, and he'll never be a guard dog...
