Re: Standing up for yourself
Standing up for yourself is definitely important.  With slapping I mean any behavior that counters aggressive assault of any kind in a reciprocal manner.  I will also refrain from eye for an eye until it becomes obvious that the other party is deaf to reason and reasonableness.  I still think anybody who enjoys harassing someone else that were not provoking such action is stupid, regardless of their motive.  The wheel turns and you will eventually reap what you sow.  Not to take that into account is stupid.

If I Turned The Other Cheek
I would have ignored the situation my (step)daughter was in and instead of taking a stand against those who were hurting her, I would have sent them love.  While I might pray for them and for myself to prevent me from going and hurting them, I am not turning the other cheek.  To me it is a greater sin/crime to ignore something when it's wrong than it is to stand up to it.

Standing up for yourself
It is important to stand up for yourself.  Of course, when possible, and even when it seems impossible, it is important to fight nonviolently--you don't literally have to slap someone.  But, yes, stand up for yourself.

People who persistently harass others aren't necessarily "stupid" for failing to see that it doesn't get them anywhere.  I suspect they are on "power trips" and simply enjoy harassing others.  The victims have to find their own source of power to leverage against the harassing power.
