Stimulating article.  To my understanding, selflessness has nothing to do with self condemnation.  To the contrary, to be able to have empathy with others, you need to accept your self, with all your peculiarities as it is right now and not wait for some future perfected self.  It is only by getting to know this supposedly imperfect self, that you can get to know the self of others and understand their plight.  To loose your self means to realize that you have come into being, dependant on what is not self, and that all others are also coming and staying as they are, not by own power alone but always dependent on and conditioned by others and the whole universe as it is.  There is no judgement in the direction of either good or bad required to realize this.  We are as we are and we need not blame anybody, including ourselves, for what some may construe as "faults".  Jesus didn't go about condemning people willy nilly.  He went about forgiving people willy nilly whilst he condemned those who condemned others.  In fact, He never spoke badly to any "sinner" and was often criticized for hanging out with "sinners".  He did criticized the teachers of sin, rather vehemenantly, and preached forgiveness and grace at the expense of His own life.
