In the shameful history of how the government of the US

has treated the people who were here first, there were many such "gifts" made in order to acquire fertile and productive lands for the European Americans.  The lands given as "reservations" were usually simply large tracts of unwanted territory.

One such area was in Oklahoma, where the Cherokee Nation of the Carolinas was marched--they call it The Trail of Tears--and many who began that long trail never finished it.  The new Cherokee lands were bleak and dry, completely unlike the lush green lands they were forced out of.

Imagine everyone's surprise some years later when oil was discovered under the Cherokee in Oklahoma!  At the time, efforts were made to shift them off, and reclaim the land (the oil) in the interests of whiter Americans.  Happily, in this instance, justice prevailed, and the Cherokee Nation benefitted financially in a big way!
