But just as many Germans were silent when the Nazis were in power, so are many Muslims silent when atrocities are committed in their name. Of course, they tend to take to the streets quickly when someone insults their 'prophet', who, among other things, was a killer himself...

Thanks, Auslander! I am not a believer either, but I know that the creation of Israel (by the Jews themselves, against huge obstacles) was simply a matter of basic human necessity. If we look at the long process that led up to it, beginning (rather arbitrarily) with the Balfour Declaration in 1917, we can't really say it was rushed, although it would probably not have occurred had it not been for the Shoah.
And ever since then, Israel has had to defend herself against overwhelming numerical odds, against states who have deliberately left Palestinians to live in refugee slums, because it serves their political aims...

Naut, I heard this awful news while away. Someone else said this in another comment down there, but it bears repeating. You have a compassionate heart and an empathy that astounds me. This could not have been told better if an Israely would have written it. You totally get the pain, the frustration felt by a country held hostage by despicable criminals like that man. Not all Palestinians are criminals, neither were all germans Natzis but their silence and ther aquiecence to these animals representing them speaks volumes. The needless barbarity of the crime this man commited also speaks for itself as of the kind of people these so called freadom fighters are. Great post Naut! Good for you!!!!

This is a most outstanding post. I am amazed at some of the responses. One saying if the Palestinians will accept their existence or not. He goes on to say only God knows. God spoke centuries before the Islamic religion existed. The Jews do exist and will continue to do so and it is not only here but in all the world where the Islamic thugs are trying to take over. It is an outstanding happening but it is predicted and has a way of playing itself out!

Naut: We are faced with an intractable problem. Compromises will have to be made. What are they I do not know. Yet I hope they can be found. The Israelis are under constant threat. That is sad. Will the Palestinians ever accept their right to exist? It does not seem probable? What then? God only knows.

There have been and there are still atrocities on BOTH sides! Sorry to remind you of that, but BOTh sides here have manding to do. and it won't stop until both sides recognized that. The creation of Israel was rushed after the WWII and now all suffer the consequences. And sorry, but I am not a believer and do not believe that that's god doing or willing or anything: it is human doing. So, it's humans who have to deal with what they do to each other and take responsabilities.

The accidental suffocating of the child particularly struck me--imagine, trying to save his life and inadvertently taking it instead. That poor mother!
I've always been against the US presence in the middle east, mainly because I think they're there for all the wrong reasons. That being said, it doesn't seem right to simply walk away and turn our backs, when things like this are happening.
I don't care what religious beliefs they have, or where they live--those are people, and they don't deserve all that horror.

Where the bullies are allowed to win because they have no ethics or morality, and the civilized folk do--so we can't treat them the way they treat others.
Or can we? Are they not demonstrating the rules they want to play by?
-sigh- No, we can't. Not by their rules. But perhaps we need some new rules of our own. Like parents with out-of-control children, there are answers. It starts with admitting the children are out-of-control, and that we cannot behave as if they are not, or as if they can be reasoned with. Somehow, they have to be dragged to their room and given a time-out until they can behave in the world community as if they are grown up.

Corbin, I agree that the current Israeli leadership leaves a lot to be desired. But no matter how distasteful, in the end I cannot bring myself to fault them in this case. Among other things, I think they were still clinging to the faint hope they would get their two soldiers back alive...

Israel needs to replace the weak leadership they now have....they are to embroiled in dealing with their own corruption issues, It makes Israel look very weak.......and that is extremely dangerous for them....it will only embolden their enemies.
