Interesting.
however, I have to point out that the British did not draw the line.   The UNSCOP did in response to Britain's terminating their Mandate of Palestine.

ZenMom - there is always the risk when distilling a religious belief to

summarize it, of over simplifying the motivations.

There was a lot more to what caused the formation of Israel to happen than the idea that God promised them the land. But at the same time the dream of a homeland was kept alive, nurtured and instilled by this belief as well as inherent ties to the region.

As for the discussion that prompted this post; it took place in the comments a couple of posts back. I'm not going to say any more about it other than it went much as I expected. I've seen the same dynamics in other discussions as well; where certain types of sympathies are assumed and one party becomes offended when their appeal to non existent sympathies ultimately fails.

I will have to continue this comment later.

As much as I respect gapcohen, I must say that I agree with what you say in this post. Certainly there were other regions of the world that the Jews might have chose as their homeland. The idea that God "promised" this piece of real estate to the Jewish people is simply ridiculous (but, that's religion for you). And, just why the U.S. continues to support Israel is a topic for another post.

(fyi..gapcohen is a woman........you must have missed her post on hot flashes........lol.)
