I've heard gunshots
they did sound like firecrackers. To me. To the people around me who'd heard them before, they certainly were gunshots. The evening news reported on the incident.
Did anyone save my life?
No person. But as an infant, and about age 2, I had physical problems where doctors said I wasn't going to live. My parents took care of me best they could, halfway expecting the worst. I survived. I attribute such to a "power" beyond human ken.

Without knowing it, I walked right into the middle of a fight.
One guy had a shovel raised and the other had a gun. yeah, someone was looking out for me that night.

When I was twelve, I nearly drowned in an Ozark swimming hole. I had not yet learned to swim and was supposed to stay in the shallow end but a friend, who also could not swim, accidentally bumped into me and knocked me off of the drop off into the deep part. I was floundering, sinking down and then trying to push my way back up and gasp for breath before I went down again. Right before I went down for the third time, a teenage girl lingering in the woods with her boyfriend noticed me. She ran out on a log and dived in and rescued me. I was coughing and sputtering, but I did not need resuscitation. The episode made me do a lot of thinking. It did not make me afraid of the water, but it made me determined to learn to swim.
