I was really a bit shaken as was everyone. He was from NY originally but I think his parents came there from Israel or 'Palestine' as it was known then. Palestine is from the Roman name given to the area by the Roman invaders so I dislike using the term.

A really lovely, lovely man who had a great influence on both religious and non religious people. I spent a few shabbat meals with them in the early 90's. Very warm and hospitable people. He was amazing. They have a tribute to him on chabad.org if you want to know more about him.
