- Go to WARNING - Impending shortage of Christian Catchphrases
Infalet - I know this is going to be tough for you to grasp but . . .
If you want to construct an argument, it simply has to be relevant to the point you are contending. Introducing a number of irrelevant points of contention only demonstrates your inability to read English. The phrase says: ". . there is none that doeth good" . . . I have done much good in my life and I know quite a few others who do not believe in God that can say the same thing. Because this statement is in context, speaking specifically about those who do not believe in God, your qualifications speaking of all people are completely irrelevant.
The phrase does not mention anything about having done a few bad things in life either, which seems to be the point you are arguing and is again irrelevant. You may also want to look up the word "abomination".

Re: Re: A bit contrite and inaccurate
Are you trying to tell me that you have never lied, cheated, stolen something, sworn at someone and so forth? Bull, in fact you just swore in your reply which means that you have sinned and that you have committed an 'abominable' work. In the Bible, any sin is abominable but there are ways of cleaning them away. Honestly, the phrase, "there is none that doeth good," is accurate because there is not a single person alive today that has done good but not sinned.
By the way, I gave qualifications for why the Bible can speak about such things, can you disprove those?

Re: A bit contrite and inaccurate
Infalet - talk about being a bit innacurate. . . "Can you really say you have never done a single bad thing? Nope. Can you really say that you are without fault? Nope. That passage as a whole is still pretty accurate to use as a so called 'catchphrase'. . . . " Why don't you show us just where in the end part of the psalm it speaks with qualification about universal human shortcomings? "They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good" Your attempt at an argument misses the point, the psalm is speaking of those who do not believe in God and says without any form of qualification that "..., there is none that doeth good" which to any reasonable person is simply bullshit.
I don't know about you but I have never done any "abominable works". Sorry about your luck if you have.

A bit contrite and inaccurate
Hey there, I am all for people sharing their ideas, but from your pieces, it doesnt sound so much as you are sharing your ideas as much as you are just blindly bashing at a belief.
I thought I would clear up a few things. Mainly the part where you quoted Psalms and said that the end part was non-realistic. Can you really say you have never done a single bad thing? Nope. Can you really say that you are without fault? Nope. That passage as a whole is still pretty accurate to use as a so called 'catchphrase' even though to Christians, it is offensive to think we are trying to sell our beliefs onto others.
I am guessing that you have had a very limited take on the Christian church and I am also guessing that your take has been from a part of it that not all of us agree with, mainly those charismatic bible thumpers as you call them.
Thats no problem, just please try to remember one simple fact, when you say something is totally unrealistic, think it through carefully. When for example the Bible says we have all sinned and done abominable works, it means just that and it is 100% true. Not a single human alive today has not sinned. Also, think of it like this, the Bible has yet to be discredited by any hardcore proof. It has quoted many different ideas that only in the last few hundred years, scientists have discovered to be true.
Anyway, thats all from me right now.
