Feenix,
I guess you have forgotten the "Oath" you took! So have I! But I do not recall it stating that "fighting and war" were the requirement for serving? I do recall something about "defending" the Constitution of the United States of America?

Forty+ years ago, I enlisted in the US Army to fight a war; the Vietnam War
And if I were 30-years younger than I am, I certainly would volunteer to go to battle in either Iraq or Afghanistan, in order to serve my country.
This world that we live is what it is, and war is, and always will be, one of the things that "is".
I do not expect to find or see peace in this realm.

Sam444,
You express a very real frustration. Men/women do not enlist to fight wars! Wars are only necessary and legitimate when defending the sovereign borders of nations from foreign invaders. America has not met that test in its "self-serving" war on terror. Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, etc... are not battlegrounds of wars! We are witnessing Colonialism revisited sustained by more lethal weaponry. "Teaching" superiority as a birth right is a dangerous political and economic tool.

The only alternative legitimacy. "At" peace is a state of mind?

I am tired of war. My whole life has been centered around war and family members dying because of it. And yet, like my son, they continue to enlist, one after the other. So, if there were no soldiers, maybe no war. Unlikely though! sam
