Re: Xeno-x,
what is the bigger problem

Xeno-x,
"Plague in the African American Community"?? Surely you jest!!! These, as you suggest, down trodden uneducated, low life people who abandon their offsprings causing all these problems are not the issue my benevolent one! Sen. Obama is pandering to the same people who insist they are! You are ignoring the bigger problem!

Glennb -- YOU don't get the point

Mr. Obama is addressing an ongoing, distressful issue.  Yes, orphans are made through fathers dying in war.  And we should be mindful of this and be aware of the plight of those children (the U.S. Government certainly is not).

However, Mr. Obama is addressing a continuing plague in the African American Community that spawns many of the problems we see in the lower income segment:  ignorance, poor health, poverty, alcohol and drug abuse, drug dealing, violence, killings, and innumerable other problems.  He speaks for tens of millions of responsible people in the African-American Community who would like to address this problem more.

I do not think, as you seem to imply, that he is ignoring the war orphans;  he is simply addressing an issue that is important to that community, and should be important to everyone, because it does affect us all in some manner.

Ciel,
My personal feeling is he is pandering to the wrong voter! He should seek out the millions who work hard for his pay! Not the ass who sits in judgement of others and their station in life. There are as many deadbeat White fathers as Black! Lets get real!

I see your point, but I am not sure I agree with your interpretation of

Obama's intent.  Could be the black female vote he is going for...   Then again, maybe he has hit one of many nails on the head--not the only one, but not an insignificant one.

What should he have said to address the issue, do you think?

Or do you disagree that the issue is worth talking about at all?

Xeno-x,
I think "dead" fathers as the bigger problem was my message here! Maybe I need to clear up my wording?

There are gross problems throughout society
Absent fathers is one of the greatest problems.

Among the African-American Community, this is one of the underlying causes for the problems there:  high birth rate, low education, high violence, gang activities, etc.  The lack of a good male role model leaves these children to develop their own culture.

Here, it seems, more than most anywhere else, effort needs to be made to steer this culture into more a positive and productive mode.

The problem certainly is not limited to that culture; but many there bear the brunt of its consequences.

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.  The edifice of the U.S. of A. has quite a few weaknesses.
