I am a great fan of yours. I love the way you observe and then describe the little things which such a great sense of humor. I hope you have a lovely day and will tell us all about it. And no my dear, you can´t walk to this country, but perhaps you might want to extend the Neckar cruise a little further east? Will only take a week or so.

Ah, my dear Auslander, you are so funny! It is so fun to get a deep, unexpected chuckle from your writing. I so adored the spittoon, I see why the the shortage existed. It would have been a pee pot in my house. lol x 2.2 Do you do any mountain biking? Also, when you talked about Don't Worry, Be Happy, I know the version by Bob Marley. I put it on when my headaches think they can win. It helps! I am jealous with glee of a cocktail cruise on the Neckar. It has to stimulate the senses beyond rationale. Have a glorious day!  sam

Re:
I remember hearing about it in the Palace of the Cardinal Rohan-Soubises in Strasbourg too. Actually one of the best porcelain producers in Europe was in Strasbourg.

On spitting
This reminds me of one of the great legends in South African history - Paul Kruger.  He used to spit on the floor.  Remember these were people who grew up on farms in a country free from many western cultural constraints.  When he visited the then Queen of England he spat on the floor as usual.  A servant quickly brought a spittoon thingy and placed it on the place where he spat.  Not being used to this kind of stuff he proceeded to spit elsewhere on the floor, again and again.
