VOGUE ~ (its been told to me that I'm addicted to iced mochas ---  ~ oh well i'll worry about it tomorrow ~ LOL)  actually, I think 'writing' is a good addiction to have.  I don't know...I think employing your mind --- that has to delve deeply to bring about cognizant coordination...well anyways...Write on Vogue ~  ~ Elyse

I agree with jmh on this one
Addiction has a negative implication; devotion a positive. Your writing entertains and informs a number of people - so the end result is a positive one. Ergo - it is a devotion!

I think devoted implies that you are helping others and addiction implies that you are hurting. So as far as I'm concerned you are a devoted writer.

Vogue
Technically, an addiction requires the presence of a strong physiological and/or psychological dependency, although it could be argued that even devotion can have elements of dependency. But the way these terms are used colloquially says more of the attitude of the speaker than it does of the subject’s ‘real’ state. To call something an ‘addiction’ is meant to convey something negative or ‘bad’, whereas devotion is thought to be inherently ‘good’, although not necessarily so in my eyes...

I personally think there is a fine line between the two however, I believe that an addiction interferes with your daily functioning in life somehow. I think this is the difference between the two, just my opinion though. I do not know what the professional take is on this subject. After all, people are deemed functional alcoholics and in this case it would blow my theory right out the window, perhaps I'm in denial because I have addictions. Personally I think we are all functional addicts with something in our lives but, if it doesn't interfere with your life go ahead and be addicted. From my  to your .

To my understanding I would say the difference between the two is
simply a matter of opinion; rather like terrorist or freedom fighter; who gets to define which is which?? I never could get that; it seems it would depend on individual definitions; interesting post my friend; thank you and many blessings from sunny Cyprus to sunny Turkey

vogue, I think I'm addicted to chips--you know anything salty and crunchy.  I can't eat just one.  If I don't stay completely away from them, it's a bag at a time.
