You can't stop caring because you care
As you say there are many stories you can tell yourself about why things are the way they are. Sometimes we have to remember the difference between the stories we tell ourselves and what really happened. In other words the analysis only wears us down. I find if i am present in the feelings I have now, acknowledge them it's OK, then they pass.
