mysteria - I like the avenue of enquiry you suggest
But I am tempted to trim the periphery and go with earthbound causes. The media aspect is an important consideration but I feel it was dropped from mainstream interest because it had so many bogus elements. The phenomena has an eery chronological correlation to crystal meth use and dependency but there is no corresponding information to suggest a connection. To me it is a widely held and nurtured anxiety that seems to have a propagating trigger that induces a mass hysteria.

Maybe they haven't stopped, and are now passe to the media
I believe it could be a (inadvertent) drug/substance/compound reaction

The book "DMT, the Spirit Molecul"e, documents test subjects amazing co-current hallucinations

Maybe the similarity in alien abductions lays in an "accidental" compound

The book Communion, is a fascinating account of one family's experience

Interesting....

strat - Re: I notice alien abductions stopped happening

That's a good point and expands on something I've mentioned in the past. The age of personal use cameras has been about the last 50 years, with an explosion of inexpensive digital image capturing devices taking place in the last decade or so. Prior to the widespread use of digital cameras, we really only had a meagre collection of grainy images captured on film showing extra-terrestrial spacecraft. Why is it that now when we have the technology to capture images proliferated to the point where just about everyone has some form of digital imaging capability handy at all times, we aren't getting any pictures?

In a general sense; the entire alien abduction anxiety has subsided and with it, so too have alien abduction claims subsided. That can't be just a coincidence.

I notice alien abductions stopped happening
about the time personal video camcorders became available. You can get cops beating someone on the side of the road, yet I still have yet to see home phone movies of aliens giving anal probes -- at least not that weren't sold in adult bookstores.

I saw a couple of odd things when I was young. But that is what it was odd, but very, very odd!  sam

maybe they looked at humans
and saw that it was futile, considering what the human race is like
